IELTS vocabulary

It is important to have a flexible use of a wide range of vocabulary as the examiner will be looking for this in the writing and speaking.

It is also necessary for your reading so that you understand the texts as they will have a lot of difficult words.

Good IELTS vocabulary is particularly important for those wanting to achieve a band 7 or higher.

Phrasal Verbs

A way to potentially increase your speaking score in the IELTS speaking test is to use phrasal verbs (if used properly!).

These will certainly be noticed by the examiner.

Collocations

Being able to collocate properly is extremely important when you speak or write in English, and your skills in this area will be something the examiner is looking out for.

Idioms

Idioms can be confusing to non-native speakers of English as they are phrases that do not have the same meaning as the words actually spoken.

However, they are quite common in English so it is important that you learn about them.

IELTS Vocabulary: Why is it important?

Of all the skills and techniques you need to do well in the IELTS test, vocabulary is definitely one of the most important.

It makes up 25% of your total mark in the Writing and Speaking tests. Not only this, but did you know that the Listening and Reading tests are really vocabulary tests too? Take a look at the table below.

The table shows words in the question from an official IELTS reading test on the left and words in the text on the right. It demonstrates how many synonyms are used and therefore, needed to answer the question. All IELTS Reading and Listening tests are like this. In short, if you don’t have a wide ranging vocabulary you won’t be able to do well on the Listening or Reading tests.

Below we will talk about how you can improve your IELTS vocabulary.

The Correct Way to Learn IELTS Vocabulary

The only way that you can learn new words and then use them properly is if you learn them from context, or in other words, from real sources of information, not lists.

Below is a 5 step plan to help you increase your range of vocabulary.

1] Pick a book, TV show, radio show, podcast or magazine you are interested in. Don’t pick something boring because you will not stick to the plan and you will easily get distracted. People learn more effectively when they enjoy what they are doing.

2] Buy a special notebook. It doesn’t have to be expensive, just something that you can write in every day.

3] Read or listen to whatever you have chosen and pick out 15 words you don’t understand. Listen or read and try to guess what they mean from the context. (This step is very important because it will help you remember them.) Note the 15 new words down in your notebook.

4] Look up the new words in a dictionary. You can do this online. Beside each word note the meaning, an example sentence or two, collocations, synonyms, antonyms and pronunciation. You can also draw pictures; whatever will help you remember the word.

5] Review the new words after one week, two weeks and then one month. Also, practice using the new words in a sentence.

Understand the Writing test

Write clearly, organise your ideas and use a varied vocabulary.

Purpose of the test

The IELTS Writing test is designed to assess a wide range of writing skills, including how well you

– write a response appropriately
– organise ideas
– use a range of vocabulary and grammar accurately

This is the case for whichever version of the IELTS test you are taking.

Ielts writing task Timing

The IELTS Writing test takes 60 minutes. Spend 20 minutes on Task 1, and 40 minutes on Task 2.

You will need to manage your own time, so make sure you move on to Task 2 after 20 minutes.

Two tasks

There are two tasks in the IELTS Writing test. You will be asked to write at least 150 words for Task 1 and at least 250 words for Task 2.

IELTS Academic Writing test

Write in a formal style in the IELTS Academic Writing test.

In Task 1 you will be presented with a graph, table, chart or diagram. You will be asked to describe, summarise or explain the information in your own words. This might involve describing and explaining data, describing the stages of a process or how something works, or describing an object or event.

In Task 2 you will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. You should find the issues interesting and easy to understand.

IELTS General Training Writing test

The topics used in the IELTS General Training Writing test are of general interest.

In Task 1 you will be presented with a situation and asked to write a letter requesting information or explaining the situation. You can write the letter in a personal, semi-formal or formal style.

In Task 2 you will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. You can use a fairly personal style.

Marking

Your Writing test will be marked by a certificated IELTS examiner.

Advice:- Make the most of your Writing test:

1] analyse each task properly and spend some time making notes

2] highlight or underline key words in the tasks to make sure that you focus on what you have to do

3] plan your answers

4] use paragraphs clearly; put one idea in each paragraph

5] do not repeat ideas using different words

6] do not copy whole sentences from the question – you will receive no marks for this

7] keep to the topic; do not write about unrelated subjects

8] manage your time; remember, Task 2 is worth twice as much as Task 1

9] spend approximately 20 minutes on Task 1 and approximately 40 minutes on Task 2

10] pay attention to the number of words required for each task; you will lose marks if you do not write at least 150 words for Task 1 and at least 250 words for Task 2

11] learn to recognise how long 150 and 250 words look in your handwriting; you will not have time to count during the test

12] you must write your answers in full; answers written in note form or in bullet points will lose marks

13] pay attention to spelling, grammar and punctuation; you will lose marks for mistakes

14] avoid informal language

15] do not memorise model answers; examiners are trained to recognise them and your test will be invalid

16] spend several minutes re-reading and correcting your answers
