Shipments from America’s top 20 export states were worth a total US$1.2 trillion in 2015 or about four-fifths of all exports from the United States. The 2015 dollar amount represents a -1.6% drop since 2012.
The four leading export states (Texas, California, Washington and New York) account for almost 40% of all American exports by value.
In addition to showcasing the leading 20 export states, we look at the 10 major exports for each of the top four export states.

Among the above states, the fastest-growing exporters since 2012 were: Kentucky (up 26.8%), South Carolina (up 22.9%), Arizona (up 22.6%) and Washington (up 14.1%).
Top export states experiencing their global sales shrink at the fastest pace were led by: Louisiana (down -21.8%), Florida (down -18.7%), New Jersey (down -14%) and Illinois (down -7%).
Top 10 Exports from Texas
Below are the top 10 exports from Texas during 2015. Within parenthesis is the percentage of each export category compared to the total value of all Texan exports.
- Miscellaneous petroleum oils: $24.7 billion (9.8% of state’s exports)
- Light petroleum oils: $17.8 billion (7.1%)
- Computer parts and accessories: $9.9 billion (3.9%)
- Aircraft including engines, parts: $5.7 billion (2.3%)
- Crude petroleum oils: $5.6 billion (2.2%)
- Modems, similar reception/transmission devices: $5.2 billion (2.1%)
- Integrated circuits (processors/controllers): $5.1 billion (2%)
- Liquified propane: $4.8 billion (1.9%)
- Boring/sinking machine miscellaneous parts: $3.2 billion (1.3%)
- Miscellaneous motor vehicle parts: $3.1 billion (1.2%)
The listed 10 product categories represent a third (33.9%) of the value of overall Texan exports.
Among these categories, the fastest-appreciating items since 2012 were: crude petroleum oils (up 751.9%), liquified propane (up 94.5%), computer parts and accessories (up 47.3%) and aircraft including engines and parts (up 16%).
Those export categories that declined in value were: boring/sinking machine miscellaneous parts (down -35.3%), miscellaneous petroleum oils (down -28.1%), miscellaneous motor vehicle parts (down -19.2%) and light petroleum oils (down -9.9%).
Overall, the average value of all Texan exports fell in value by -5.1% from 2012 to 2015.

- Machinery for making semi-conductors: $3.3 billion (2%)
- Miscellaneous petroleum oils: $3.1 billion (1.9%)

Among these categories, the fastest-appreciating items since 2012 were: spacecraft, satellites and launch vehicles (up 461.9%), cell phones (up 96.1%), machinery for making semi-conductors (up 59.4%) and large helicopters (up 51.8%).
Two exports declined in value: boring/sinking machine miscellaneous parts (down -51.9%) and miscellaneous petroleum oils (down -14.2%).
Overall, the average value of all Californian exports rose in value by 2.2% from 2012 to 2015.

Overall, the average value of all Washington exports rose in value by 14.1% from 2012 to 2015.
